Learn to Dive on Koh Tao: the complete 2026 guide
Koh Tao certifies more new divers than almost anywhere on earth — for good reason. Here's exactly what it costs, how long it takes, and what to expect from your first days underwater.
If you've ever watched a diver roll backwards off a boat and thought "I could never do that" — you're exactly who Koh Tao was made for. The island's sheltered bays, warm water and gentle reefs make it one of the easiest and cheapest places in the world to become a certified diver, and most people go from total beginner to certified in three or four days.
This guide walks you through the whole thing: the courses, the costs, the conditions, and a few honest tips from a team that's been teaching here for over twenty years.
Why Koh Tao to learn?
Three reasons. First, the water: calm, clear and warm (28–30°C most of the year), with shallow training bays that take the fear out of your first breaths. Second, the price — competition on the island keeps certification costs among the lowest anywhere. Third, the sheer concentration of dive professionals, which means small groups and instructors who teach every single day.
The course that starts it all: Open Water
The SSI (or PADI-equivalent) Open Water Diver course is the qualification almost everyone begins with. Over 3–4 days you'll cover a little theory, practise core skills in shallow water, then complete four open-water dives. At the end you're certified to dive to 18 metres, anywhere in the world, for life.
At Carabao the Open Water course is ฿9,900, taught in groups of no more than four, in English, Italian, German, Spanish, French or Thai. Booked as a dive-and-stay package, three nights' beachfront accommodation are included at the same ฿9,900 — more on that below.
What it costs in 2026
Prices current for 2026. Multi-dive and group bookings reduce the per-dive cost — just ask.
Do you need to be fit, or a swimmer?
You don't need to be an athlete. You should be comfortable in water and able to swim a short distance and float, but the course is built for ordinary people, not Olympians. If you can relax and breathe slowly, you can dive. Any medical conditions are worth a quick check with us beforehand.
The dive-and-stay shortcut
Here's the tip most first-timers miss: book your course and your accommodation together. On Koh Tao, a handful of dive resorts — Carabao among them — let you sleep where you train. That means no taxi across the island at 7am, no hunting for a hostel, and at Carabao, three nights thrown in with your Open Water course for the same ฿9,900.
When the boat leaves from the beach in front of your room, the whole experience slows down in the best way. You dive, you nap by the pool, you play volleyball at sunset, you do it again tomorrow.
When to come
Diving runs year-round. The calmest, clearest conditions are usually from March to September, while the green season later in the year can bring the biggest marine life, including the chance of whale sharks at Chumphon Pinnacle. There's no truly bad time to learn here.
